Manoj Tiwary hits out at Ganguly???????

Date : 29/11/09
Kolkata: Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary took an indirect dig at the former India captain Sourav Ganguly saying players in his team were pursuing "individual goals" and not performing as a unit in the drawn Ranji Super League Group B match against Saurashtra here.

Apparently hinting at Ganguly, Tiwary said, "It's time to bid goodbye to our reputation and play as a unit now in the present context."

"Instead of playing for individual goals, our players need to focus on team goal. There is a room for improvement in that area," Tiwary said in the post-match interaction.

Bengal were humiliated on their home turf after Saurashtra enforced a follow-on with a 194-run first innings lead. Saurashtra logged three points, while Bengal had to be content with one point from the drawn match that ended on Friday.

Ganguly had a forgettable outing scoring 16.

"We need to sit together, discuss what is going wrong and rectify our mistakes. We have tough two matches ahead (against Uttar Pradesh and Delhi)," Tiwary said.

Tiwary captained a side which have retired India batsman Ganguly, who will captain Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL-III Twenty20 extravaganza next year

Ganguly penalised for coming late in Ranji match

Kolkata: Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly was penalised on Wednesday for turning up late in Bengal's Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra at Eden Gardens here.

Ganguly joined his team more than an hour after the start of their match as he was receiving massage from the team masseur for a "back spasm" in the morning.

On day two of the match with Saurashtra resuming at their overnight score of 372 for three, Bengal began without the ace left-hander, who was substituted by Abhishek Jhunjhunwala when the play started at 9 am in the morning.

With Ganguly nowhere to be seen, Bengal became the laughing stock for those watching the match as they were reduced to 10 players when pacer Ashok Dinda had to leave the field for one over during that period.

Umpires did not allow further substitution for Dinda and thus Bengal had to do with 10 players on the field.

Match Referee Suman Dutta of the Assam Cricket Association was not available for a comment but according to sources umpires Samir Bandekar and K Srinath "waited" for Ganguly for three overs before imposing a "no comfort rule" on the former India captain.

Ganguly joined at 10.10am but for his 70 minutes absence he was barred from bowling as a "penalty".

"He had developed a back spasm and was getting treated in the dressing room,"
Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary said.

In the post-match conference, Tiwary played it down and refused blatantly that Ganguly was absent for 70 minutes after the start of play.

Tendulkar greatest batsman of my generation: Ganguly

15/11/2009

Kolkata: Paying tribute to Sachin Tendulkar on his reaching the milestone of 20 years in international cricket, former India captain Sourav Ganguly today described the Mumbai maestro as the greatest batsman of his generation.

"Probably Sachin is the best batsman I have seen. He just amazes me. He just keeps going on and on. We hope he carries on some more years," Ganguly, who was Tendulkar's one-time opening ODI partner, said.
"It's not just about talent but it's how you use talent that makes you special. There have been a lot of players who had talents but they have not continued for a long time and that's what makes Sachin special. He uses his talent to the most," said Ganguly.

Congratulating Tendulkar, who will complete 20 years of international cricket tomorrow, Ganguly said, "First I want to congratulate him on completing 20 years in international cricket which is phenomenal. Starting at the age of 16 and going on to play for 20 years with this intensity is unbelievable."

Having featured in more than 400 matches with Tendulkar, Ganguly said he had scores of memories with the Mumbai batsman since they met in Indore during a U-15 national camp.
"I have got a lot of memories. I met him for the first time in 1987-88. I had heard a lot about him. From the day one, I knew he was special," Ganguly said.'

DADA COMPLETED 15000 RUNS IN FIRST CLASS CRICKET !! ANOTHER MILESTONE !!

Date : 14/11/09

Calcutta: Sourav Ganguly batted like a man possessed but, unfortunately, that wasn’t good enough to ensure a first innings lead for Bengal against Baroda in their Ranji Trophy Super League encounter, at the Eden Thursday.

Poor shot selection, inept batting by the lower order and a couple of horrible decisions saw Bengal capitulate for 293 — 14 runs short of Baroda’s first innings total of 307.

Baroda were 58 for one in their second innings; An outright result is highly unlikely unless Baroda, having ensured three points, choose to go for the kill.

The hosts lost their last five wickets for 36 runs after Sourav scored a delightful 76 (97 balls, 14x4) — his 86th first-class cricket half-century. Those who thought Sourav would give the morning session to the bowlers were in for a shock.

The former India captain hit Irfan Pathan for four boundaries — all pierced through off-side, which made rival captain Connor Williams take Irfan out of the attack.
It looked as if he’d started from where he left off, last December, against Goa (his last first-class match).

Such had been the ferocity of his attack that, when he reached 40, the other batsman, Arindam Das, was yet to add to his 52 overnight. Sourav completed his 50 off 54 deliveries with 10 boundaries.
Das (61), on the other hand, got a debatable decision when he was adjudged leg before by an incoming Murtuza Vahora delivery. Das even gestured to his bat to point out that there had been an inside edge.

In came skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla (69, 107 balls, 9x4, 2x6) and started playing his shots in customary fashion. He pulled a Vahora bouncer for six and hit Yusuf Pathan over long-on for another.

Sourav stepped out to hit left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh for a straight boundary.
On 67, Sourav completed a personal milestone of 15,000 first class runs. The duo added 76 runs for the fifth wicket and a first innings lead didn’t look an uphill task.

At 218, Sourav went for a cut when Yusuf hurried one on. The ball took the inside edge before hitting the stumps. Bengal went to lunch with the scoreboard reading 252 for five and needing 56 runs to reach the magic figure of 308.

Post lunch, left-arm spinner Singh changed his tactic and started bowling leg-stump line to Shukla who, for once, couldn’t curb his impetuosity, having been tied down for some time. He tried to play an inside-out scoop only to hole out to Firdous Bhaja at mid-off.

At 257 for six, it was expected the rest would gather the required 51 runs.
While Dibyendu Chakraborty (19) scratched around for 100 minutes before edging one to ’keeper Pinal Shah off Irfan Pathan, debutant Sayan Sekhar Mondal (10) got a real bad one from umpire Subrata Das — ruled caught behind off Vahora — as video footage gathered by the Bengal video analyst clearly shows that Shah took it off the bounce.

The youngster waited in the field and later received a caution from Match Referee Sanjib Pal. Vahora (4/35) then got rid of Sourav Sarkar (1) and Ranadeb Bose (1) to ensure at least three points for Baroda.

Skipper Shukla, meanwhile, pulled a hamstring while bowling in Baroda’s second innings and has been advised couple of days’ rest.

It has been learnt that the team management might just request the CAB to lodge an official complaint against the standard of umpiring. With six cameras specially installed to assess the performance of umpires, it will be interesting to see what kind of report is submitted by Subrata Banerjee, the umpires’ coach.

Sourav plots Yusuf’s fall

Date : 11/11/09

Calcutta: Bengal off-spinner Sourashish Lahiri attributed the prized scalp of Yusuf Pathan on Tuesday to Sourav Ganguly’s ‘captain’s acumen’. It was sweet revenge for the offie who had been clobbered by Pathan senior during their last meeting in 2007-08 at the Motibaug ground.

“I feel satisfied as I could successfully execute what Sourav told me. Yusuf was trying the slog sweep in the first over and sustained a muscle pull.

Dada came up at the end of the over and told me to keep a man at short square leg, which will induce him to go for the lofted shot.“As his feet movement was hampered after the first over, it was a chance we took keeping in mind that he may not be able to reach for the lofted shot, and it paid off,” Lahiri said at the end of the day’s play.Baroda coach Paras Mhambrey, however, defended Yusuf’s shot selection.

“That’s how Yusuf plays. He is a proven match winner for us. Whether it is the first or the last ball of the day, this is how he bats. He went for his shot but wasn’t successful,” Mhambrey said.He praised Irfan Pathan and Pinal Shah for showing great application when the team was in the dumps.“The wicket had a bit of green, something I haven’t seen at Eden Gardens in recent years.
Irfan and Pinal showed great character. It required a lot of application as Bengal bowlers were on top during that phase.”Mhambrey pointed out that they would like to bat at least two sessions on Wednesday. On the other hand, Bengal captain Shukla said he would be satisfied if his bowlers could restrict Baroda to another 40-50 runs.

“The first hour as usual would be crucial as the wicket is easing out after that. I am happy with the way we bowled and hope to wrap it up quickly tomorrow (Wednesday),” Shukla said.

Sourav factor is looming large - The batting shouldn’t be entirely dependent on me, says former captain

Calcutta: Sourav Ganguly is not reading much into his ‘comeback’ to first class cricket on Tuesday. But his presence is enough to redraw the opposition’s plans.
The former India captain, who last played against Goa in Delhi during Bengal’s promotion to Elite group in 2008, will be turning out against Baroda at the Eden.
Bengal won their opening Ranji match against Maharashtra in Pune last week.
“Don’t read too much into my playing… I will be playing a four-day match after a long while. The batting shouldn’t be entirely dependent on me,” said Sourav, after more than two hours of practice on Monday.
After a round of fielding practice, Sourav got down to some knocking before discussing strategies with the thinktank.
The Sourav factor, though, is keeping Baroda on their toes.
“He comes in with a wealth of international experience and that will obviously help Bengal… There’s no doubt he will be a big factor. But we also have plans in place for him,” said Baroda coach Paras Mhambrey.
Sourav feels Bengal, despite the absence of four frontline players, will start with an advantage at home. “Ours is a good team and we should do well. This is a good opportunity for youngsters and they should grab this chance,” he said.
Roger Binny is also confident that Sourav’s availability will come in handy. “His experience is an asset. He will prove to be a motivation for the youngsters in the side,” said the Bengal coach.
Laxmi Ratan Shukla is aware that Sourav’s presence will help him on the field.
“What can I say about him? His presence will be of great help… I’m sure we will do well in this game too. The aim will be to maintain the momentum and the same intensity,” said the Bengal captain.
Sourav, too, is aware of Baroda’s strengths and the Pathan brothers. “They are a good side… Irfan is making a comeback from injury. He will be raring to go.”
Does he have a message for the Pathan brothers? “Don’t hit too many sixes,” he quipped before leaving the Eden.

Ganguly back as Knight Riders captain

Kolkata: Former India captain sourav ganguly on Friday returned as the KKR's skipper for IPL   3 .

The controversy-ridden IPL outfit, which finished at the bottom of the table this year, also named Dav Whatmore as its new coach with Delhi Ranji coach Vijay Dahiya as his deputy.
Pakistani pace legend Wasim Akram was appointed as the mentor of the side.
"Andrew Leipus and Adrian le Roux have been appointed physiotherapist and team trainer respectively," the team management said in a statement.
"The KKR management held several meetings over the past few weeks to discuss and plan the way forward for the franchise and the team. After weeks of careful deliberation, keeping in mind the vision and ideals of the team, the KKR management has appointed Dav Whatmore as the new team coach," the management said, adding Ganguly played an instrumental role in the entire process.
"KKR is looking forward to an exciting and successful season ahead with the new appointments and strategies in place. I am excited at the prospect of working with Dav and the entire team closely in addition to playing at our home ground once again," Ganguly said.
Insisting that Ganguly's position as captain is not merely ceremonial, the outfit said the former India skipper would be the "key driving force" who would "shape the cricket team" and "would be responsible for all cricket related decisions with regards to the 2010 season."
After leading the team in the inaugural IPL, Ganguly fell out with the then coach John Buchanan, who first mooted the "multi-captaincy" idea, which did not find favour with the management.
McCullum led the side in the second IPL but came a cropper.
Hailing Whatmore's appointment, KKR co-owner Jay Mehta said, "Dav has the right vision not only for the team, but for each of the players, and for the franchise as a whole. He is very aware of our current position in IPL and knows that there is only one way to go now: up."
Whatmore, on his part, said he was looking forward to working with Ganguly.
"I am optimistic about the season ahead and have the utmost faith in Sourav, the team, and KKR management and look forward to a successful tournament. I will be working closely with the team to continue building KKR into a successful franchise both on and off field," he said.

Asoka has made ordinary decisions before too - DADA

Doug Bollinger was outstanding for the Aussies. He bowled a consistent line throughout with good pace and that kept the Indian batsmen under pressure. The turning point was the run out of Yuvraj Singh. It was outstanding fielding by Ricky Ponting and that wicket put a lot of pressure on Dhoni. Once again, he had to play out of his skin to see India through. He needed a solid partnership either with Raina or Jadeja, but that did not happen.

It was an opportunity for Raina and Jadeja to make a mark. But under pressure, that did not happen. Raina needs to take a look at his game. Looking at him on TV just gives me a feeling that he hangs back against the fast bowlers which prevents him from controlling the game. It is a mental adjustment and he needs to get it sorted quickly.

Sachin looked very good till he was done in by an ordinary decision by Asoka De Silva. Asoka has made such decisions in the past and it could be a worry to both teams if he makes such decisions in future.

Dhoni will be a bit disappointed that his batting unit could not get past 250. But he will have to put this behind and get ready for the next game as the series is still wide open.

Although Australia won this game, there are still a few things to worry about. They will have to reconsider the team composition as their batting doesn’t quite look good, especially the middle-order. They will not be able to restrict India within 250 all the time. With Watson bowling, I am sure it has given Ricky Ponting an option to play another batsman which he must do to put runs up.

The injury of Peter Siddle will be a concern for him. But this could put extra responsibility on Mitchell Johnson and this might improve his performance level as he has been very ordinary throughout this series.
Hauritz’s performance will make Ponting happy because if he bowls well in the middle, which is so important in Indian conditions, he will put a lot of pressure on the Indian middle order.

Congratulations to the Mohali curator for preparing an excellent wicket.

Hopefully, we will see another exciting match in Hyderabad where the pitch is outstanding. PMG
