Sourav hopes to start

Calcutta : Sourav Ganguly was unveiled as the brand ambassador for the Mohammedan Sporting Platinum Jubilee Cup that will be held from Friday to commemorate the club’s 75th year of their first Calcutta Football League triumph in 1934. “It is a matter of great honour and privilege for me,” Sourav said at a news conference, here on Thursday .

Sourav will play for the black and white brigade against East Bengal at the Salt Lake Stadium on Friday. “This is the first time I’ll be playing for a big club. It’s all about participating. I’d like to play for 15 to 20 minutes. I’ll also look to avoid injuries as they are professional players,” he said in a lighter vein.

Asked whether jersey No. 99 was of his choice, Sourav said: “Numbers do not matter as I will be making up the numbers on the field. “The coach will decide when I will play. But I would like to start as there will be a lot of excitement then.”

The first match will be a clash of history when the world’s oldest club Sheffield FC, under the leadership of Greg Wright, and the oldest club in Asia — Mohun Bagan — take on each other.

Mohammedan Sporting have taken three players from Chirag United and one from Kalighat MS on lien. The Chirag players are Denson Devadas, Joshimar and Mohammed Rafique, while Christopher plays for Kalighat MS.
