We'll miss Sourav, but let's move on: Akram

KOLKATA: One of the shocks of the IPL auctions in January was when Sourav Ganguly failed to find a bidder. Not just the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he had been the 'icon' for three years, but the nine other teams of IPL 4 too ignored the former India skipper.

Wasim Akram was around on Tuesday to spell it out for his "close friend". "I believe it's time to move on. There is a time for everything. We have a new captain and a young side. This mindset...," Akram, who joined the squad on Monday, said at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday.

"I am a pretty close friend of Sourav, a family friend... We'll miss Sourav Ganguly as a leader, but it's time to move on," added Akram, into his second year as the batting consultant of KKR.

In another blow to Ganguly's legion of fans, who still believe the 'Prince of Kolkata' is the greatest skipper India has produced, the former Pakistan skipper gave his vote to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "The way Dhoni has performed in the last four years in my opinion he's the best skipper India has ever had," said Akram.

It’s a fabulous feeling... Feels great : Sourav Ganguly

Mumbai: “It’s a fabulous feeling... Feels great.”

That was former captain Sourav Ganguly’s reaction as Mahendra Singh Dhoni got the winning runs in the World Cup final.

Sourav had been at the helm when India last reached the title-round, in 2003. “The better team (Australia) won that day, the better team has won tonight... That final is history, this final is going to be talked about now,” he told The Telegraph.

Smiling, Sourav added: “See the difference when Dhoni promotes himself... Chasing 275 wasn’t going to be easy, but we played normal cricket and that worked... Gautam Gambhir’s was an excellent knock.”

Sourav singled out Dhoni and Man of the Tournament Yuvraj Singh, his protege at one time, for special mention.

Dhoni acknowledges role of Sourav Ganguly for WC Success !

Yet, more than once during this World Cup, Dhoni has demonstrated that he is conscious of the course taken by Indian cricket in the last three decades and where Saturday's victory now stands.

But cricket, Dhoni said, "was special" to Indians because of the change that the 1983 victory achieved for Indian cricket. "People started loving the sport and you then saw two individuals making their debut, Anil Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar." He then said that the successful careers of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, which began in 1996, marked the next step. "This was the chain of players because of whom we are in this position right now. We earn a lot of money, we get a lot respect and what we are trying to do is to pass it onto the next generation."

Three of the players mentioned by Dhoni were at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday night; Tendulkar a part of Dhoni's team, Kumble in the audience and new commentator-columnist Ganguly, who stood at the boundary on the far side of dressing room from where he watched the Indian team go past on its lap of honour with Tendulkar sitting on Yusuf Pathan's shoulders. Ganguly, who led India to the final of the 2003 World Cup and who still responds to India's performance as if he were a part of the team, was beaming. "What a win," he said, "what a performance."

Dada Supports Ponting On "Walk On" Issue !

Sourav Ganguly supported Ponting's view that walking can be a bad idea, especially in a big game like Thursday's quarterfinal between Australia and India in Ahmedabad.

"Sachin has never done that in the past, let's be honest, and he shouldn't because there have been times when he has been given out and he was not out," Ganguly said.

"At the end of the career, it balances. I think it's fair for everyone to wait for the umpire's decision, including Sachin Tendulkar," he added.

"It could be a big game India 100 for three, Tendulkar batting on 55, he's holding the key to India's success. I would really not want him to walk unless an umpire has given him out," Ganguly said.

"He needs to stick to the umpire's decision. Whether he does that consistently, we'll have to wait and see," he added.
